How to Tell If Your Drive Belt Is Failing

posted on
The drive belt, or serpentine belt, is a belt on your vehicle’s engine that provides power for the power steering, alternator, air conditioning, and occasionally, the cooling system’s water pump. It is made of a durable, rubber-based material, and it continues to function if the engine is powered on. If your drive belt breaks, your car will not be drivable – usually due to the engine overheating.Car Belt Service in North Carolina and South Carolina

Here are the things to look out for if you suspect you have a failing drive belt:

Visual Cracks and Wear On the Belt: If you are able, physically inspect the drive belt yourself. Look out for missing chunks of belt, cracks, tears, uneven wear, or damaged ribs in the belt. If you see any of these defects yourself, take your car to a mechanic right away.

Air Conditioning or Power Steering Malfunctioning: You will notice right away if your power steering or air condition has begun to fail. Especially if you notice a loss of power steering, head to the mechanic as soon as possible. Losing your power steering while driving could be very risky and potentially even cause an accident.

Overheated Engine: Because the drive belt oftentimes powers your engine’s cooling system, an overheated engine could be a symptom of a failing drive or serpentine belt. Bring your car to shop as soon as you notice your engine overheating.

Squealing Noises: A misaligned drive or serpentine belt can cause a high-pitched squealing noise. If you notice such a noise coming from the front of your vehicle, seek help from a professional mechanic who can replace the belt.

Usually, a serpentine or drive belt will need to be replaced after 40,000 to 70,000 miles. Some, however, have been known to last up to 100,000 miles before needing to be replaced. If it has been over 40,000 miles since you last replaced your drive belt or you notice any of the symptoms listed above, it is probably a good idea to make an appointment with your mechanic to have your belts inspected.
